History & Heritage

A location steeped in local history...

The original Linthouse Farm, also known as Lintmill, produced flax or linseed. On harvesting, this robust crop was used to produce linen fabrics, twine and rope.
Lintmill was more of a small holding, housing a few chickens and a cow for the family’s own provisions. Not much is known of Lintmill before 1900, although it is thought to have been built some time before.

Some of these images show the farm around this time, and some of the family who farmed there. May (Muir) Joss still resides within the village, and was kind enough to share her memories with us, of playing with the other girls in the photograph at Lintmill.

Unfortunately, over the years the River Ayr eroded into the land beside the farm house. Around 1955 it was no longer safe and was demolished.

Soak up the local surroundings...

Sorn (Scottish Gaelic: Sorn, meaning a kiln) is a small village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is situated on the River Ayr. It has a population of roughly 350. Local services include a church, motorbike shop, village hall, bowling green, primary school and the beautiful Sorn Castle.

Sorn Castle lays within an 8,000 acre estate which dates back to the 15th century, and is steeped in history. The village is known for its success in the Britain in Bloom competition. In 2004 it won gold in the “Small Villages” category and has previously won, amongst other awards, the “Highly Commended Certificate” a number of times in the 1980s.

Situated on the ‘River Ayr Way’, which opened in 2006 as Scotland’s first source to sea long-distance path. Lintmill Lodges are nestled just off the Catrine Road, on the banks of the River Ayr. Like many places in and around the village for Sorn, we adopted our name from a nearby farm, Lintmill.
